Food District
An operational tool for the Piacenza PDO supply chain
Recognised by the Emilia-Romagna Region on 28 May 2020, the Food District strengthens collaboration, investment and long-term vision.
Supply chain, territory and economic-environmental sustainability
Food Districts were established by Italian Law 205 of 27 December 2017 as a development model for Italian agri-food systems, based on collaboration among supply chain stakeholders.
The Emilia-Romagna Region approved the implementing provisions for recognising Food Districts with Resolution no. 1816 of 28 October 2019. In this framework, the Protection Consortium created the Food District of Piacenza PDO Cured Meats, recognised on 28 May 2020.
It was the first Food District recognised by the Emilia-Romagna Region and was created to strengthen the Consortium's institutional activity and offer a long-term vision for the whole supply chain.

A project worth over 47 million euros
After recognition, the District joined the first Food District call promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture with a project dedicated to the economic and environmental sustainability of the supply chain and territory.
The project, worth over 47 million euros, brought together eight cured meat producers and five pig farms in a District Contract. The commitment decree for the resources was communicated on 13 July 2023.
The interventions concern production modernisation, expansions, investments in pig farms and technologies able to combine the craftsmanship of Piacenza PDO cured meats with contemporary regulatory and business needs.
A vision for the whole supply chain
The District works to connect the different production sectors, share issues and build more balanced conditions along the supply chain, from farms to cured meat producers.
The goal is to guarantee consumers Coppa Piacentina PDO, Pancetta Piacentina PDO and Salame Piacentino PDO from an organised and aware Piacenza production system.
This path aims to involve the Consortium's membership base, the primary sector and producers of raw materials for pig feed as broadly as possible.
Territory
The production territory map
The province of Piacenza, between the Po river and the Apennines, creates a unique microclimate that contributes in an exclusive way to cured meat ageing.
